Low-Frequency Modes of Tropical Ocean Dynamics*

چکیده

Basinwide very low-frequency (VLF) modes with zonal uniformly deepening and shoaling of the equatorial thermocline are found as solutions of linear shallow-water equations with the meridional basin boundaries under an equatorial b plane. They can be understood as the free heat-content recharge oscillations. The interannual VLF modes had been recognized as the essential part of the coupled recharge oscillator theory for the El Niño– Southern Oscillation. It is suggested that the decadal VLF modes may also be transformed into coupled modes relevant to the Pacific decadal climate variability through the ocean–atmosphere interaction in the Tropics.

An Equatorial Ocean Recharge Paradigm for ENSO. Part II: A Stripped-Down Coupled Model

The conceptual recharge oscillator model intuitively established in Part I is derived from a dynamical framework of a Cane–Zebiak type model for tropical ocean–atmosphere interaction. A two-strip approximation to the equatorial ocean dynamics and one-strip approximation to the SST dynamics are employed to obtain a strippeddown coupled model that captures the main physics of the Cane–Zebiak type...

Variability of Deep-Ocean Mass Transport: Spectral Shapes and Spatial Scales

This paper studies the variability of deep-ocean mass transport using four 1000-yr integrations performed with coupled general circulation models. Statistics describing the spectral and spatial features are considered. It is shown that these features depend crucially on the time-mean state. For the transport of tropical and subtropical water masses in three of the integrations, the spectral lev...

Climate Fluctuations of Tropical Coupled Systems—The Role of Ocean Dynamics

The tropical oceans have long been recognized as the most important region for large-scale ocean– atmosphere interactions, giving rise to coupled climate variations on several time scales. During the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) decade, the focus of much tropical ocean research was on understanding El Niño–related processes and on development of tropical ocean models capable of simul...

Dynamics and Thermodynamics Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Haiyan

Tropical cyclone Haiyan (TCH) that formed over the West Pacific Ocean during 3-11 November 2013 has been investigated using three datasets produced by Japan Meteorology Agency, ECMWF and NCEP. Strength of TCH has been studied using two synoptic parameters of 10-m wind velocity and mean sea level pressure (MSLP). Following, three dynamic parameters including vertical wind shear (VWSH) vector, he...

R-Modes in the ocean of a magnetic neutron star

We study the dynamics of r-modes in the ocean of a magnetic neutron star. We modeled the star’s ocean with a spherical rotating thin shell and assumed that the magnetic field symmetry axis is not aligned to the shell’s spin axis. In the magnetohydrodynamic approximation, we calculate the frequency of ` = m rmodes in the shell of an incompressible fluid. Different r-modes with ` and `±2 are coup...
